Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hypnotherapy?

Psychological therapy and counseling is the treatment of emotional and psychological disorders, unwanted habits and undesirable feelings, using psychological techniques alone. The aim of all such therapy is to assist people in finding meaningful alternatives to their present unsatisfactory ways of thinking, feeling or behaving. Hypnotherapy is perfectly safe. Most people, EVEN SCEPTICS say after a session how wonderfully relaxed they felt. Hypnosis is a state of mind, in which our subconscious is able to communicate with our conscious mind. It may be better to define “hypnosis” by what it does rather than what it is and in this regard, it is widely accepted as a most excellent method by which we may access our inner potential.

Hypnosis is a way of guiding your imagination to create a new reality.

How does it work?

When we are in hypnosis our minds are more open, this allows your subconscious mind to become more powerful and open to positive suggestion and change. I cannot make you do anything against your morals or beliefs. During the session you can open your eyes at any point and are not in any way out of control. It is only when you are relaxed that I can help you to make the changes YOU want in your life. All I will do is guide you through the process one step at a time. So the truth is YOU are in control and make all the changes needed using the power of your own mind!

What is NLP?

NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming was created in 1975 by Richard Bandler and John Grinder who took it upon themselves to look at why some therapists had extraordinary results with their clients and others did not. These two extra-ordinary men initially studied the work of popular therapists Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls and (family therapist) Virginia Satir, (they later studied others who contributed to this exciting field). They studied everything about these people; body postures, how they were feeling, use and structure of language, tone, pace and timbre of voice and many other areas. From this they developed models of the therapists behaviours which they could teach others to replicate to achieve similar results. From these original studies grew many other techniques for quickly and effectively changing thoughts, behaviours and beliefs. These techniques are what is commonly known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

Who may benefit from Hypnotherapy?

Again, the answer to this question is “virtually everyone”. Given that hypnotherapy can be utilised to access a person’s inner potential and that probably no one is performing to their actual potential, then this answer is literally true. However, it is not just potential which Hypnotherapy is well placed to address but also one’s inner resources to effect beneficial change.
Although there remain many other areas of human suffering in which Hypnotherapy may bring relief, there are instances in which it may be contra-indicated. These could include some manifestations of depressive illness, epilepsy, psychosis (e.g. schizophrenia) and some breathing problems.

So what will happen in a session?

After arriving we will sit down and discuss your needs, I will explain fully how I can help and what I think is the core problem and the best approach to take using all my skill and knowledge of the human mind and behaviour. The therapy session will not start with hypnosis but may including but not limited to NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and talking. I often explore metaphors in order to help you.

How many sessions will I need?

It is not an easy question to answer because every person is an individual and as I treat you the person not the symptom, it is something we can discuss at the consultation and on a session by session assessment. I do not offer a one session fixes all solution as I think this unrealistic. I can see clients between 2 and 8 sessions depending on the issue and the client.
