Psychoeducation

Category : Uncategorized

The Psychoeducation of the client is one of the most important aspects of therapy for the client. Psychoeducation is an important first step of treatment.

Every behaviour, thought or emotion has a pattern however most clients don’t know, understand and more importantly recognise this happens and the effect of such impactful things going on.

For example, I tell clients “Most us have conversations with ourselves in our heads but we rarely listen to what we saying or telling ourselves” and this seems to start off a process of reflective thought straight away.

Instinctively, many people believe what their brains tell them. And, they are surprised to learn that just because they think something, doesn’t make it true.

My job is help educate the client uncover those patterns so they are no longer a nonconscious process, once they become in the conscious awareness of the client they then start to recognise what’s useful and what not.

Explaining what happens in the brain to cause symptoms helps your clients. It helps them to better understand their disorder. And, it helps them understand what they can do to create new circuits in their brain.

Once the client knows how, what and why they are doing that thing then we can start to work on that thing finding the adjustments that need to take place in order for the client to move forward and gain control.

When clients feel valued, capable, and clear on what they need to do, they tend to bring a better attitude toward therapy.

Educating your clients about depression, anxiety, or another disorder they may have, helps them to understand the facts. Psychoeducation can help people identify their problematic coping strategies, as well as understand the negative consequences.

Education all comes down to giving the client more control of the issue and being able to recognise in the future if they need to. It all about giving the client another set of tools in life that they can use everyday, they may not need all the tools however they will be in the tool bag metaphorically.

Education is key to allowing the client to not only understand the problem more but being able to feel more in control of the problem. By gaining that confidence in themselves and how they think this can create a massive shift internally turning a problem into a more educated understanding of the problem and what’s may have contributed to it getting better or worse in the past.

Education helps to update the clients knowledge and understanding.

Myths About Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

So what are the most common Myths About Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?

I get a lot of clients asking the same questions or myths about hypnosis and what’s real and what’s a misconception, so I’ll address those in this blog.

One of the common myths about hypnosis is we still use a pocket watch and swing it in front of your eyes to put you into hypnosis?

Unfortunately this is not true although I would like to try as I’ve never done it. Any volunteers?

Do you go to sleep or unconscious in hypnosis?,

No we actually need to listen to what is being said so being asleep for example would have a very limited effect compared to being in hypnosis where we want you to focus.

Will I be out of control?

If you were in control then you probably wouldn’t have contacted me or a hypnotherapist. We help you to get back in control of what ever issue you are dealing with.

What’s it like being in hypnosis?

I have had many different experiences of being in hypnosis. Sometimes I hear every word being spoken other times I kind of zone out and don’t hear so much. I’ve seen beautiful colours and images yet other time not a great deal. Not every experience is the same for everyone however the one thing that stands out for me is how wonderful I feel afterwards.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

I believe if the person has the correct mind set then yes. Anyone can be trained to go into hypnosis IF they want to.

What is Hypnosis? Hypnosis is way of using your imagination to create a new reality.

Hypnotherapy is using various therapeutic techniques while the client is in hypnosis.

Can you altar my mind?

Yes, but in a positive way, we can help you to change the way you think, feel and see a problem state and get you to a resourceful one help you to overcome that issue quickly and easily using the power of you own mind. The mind is great at accepting new and positive information that will help it to understand and grow.

Can you make me do thing against my will?

No, your natural values, morals and beliefs are still working and in control so if you wouldn’t do it out of hypnosis you won’t do it in.

What about the people on the stage show? I suggest they exhibionists at heart and very out going people who love to be the life and soul of the party who happen to also be very suggestable. On stage people pop out of hypnosis if something is suggested that goes against their morals for example.

As you may hear a comedy hypnotist say “ You can’t do anything against your morals, values or beliefs while in hypnosis so can I invite all the people on stage who haven’t got any !” LOL

One of my personal favourites is “Are you going to make me cluck like a chicken?” and my answer to this is always “Yes if you want me too but it will cost you an extra tenner (£10) !”.

Therapy it is just that therapy, my soul purpose is to help you to the best of my ability.

Diabetes and Mental Health

Diabetes and Mental Health

What does diabetes mean to me and how does it make me feel…..?

It took me a while to think about and write about it, why?

For many reasons, I was diagnosed in November 2019, at first it did not bother me that much as I live a healthy lifestyle but then that started to annoy me.

Why me? I eat healthy, workout and do not even have a sweet tooth! Imagine my shock !

It turns out it is hereditary, my Grandad, Dad and brother all have it. I knew it was possible but beleived I would not be effected by it. I got annoyed because I did everything I could to avoid this diabetes thing. I saw myself as the last person to get it, however I had to accept that it is now part of my life although does not define me or even part of my identity. I am still just Adam.

My Dad had diabetes, but he was in denial for years choosing diet to control it rather than pills or insulin. He ended up on insulin. I watched my Dad fight it for years saying he didn’t believe the doctors and would just watch what he eats. My Dad was a very stubborn man and refused treatment for many years. My Dad loved to walk, he walked about 10 to 15 miles a day with the dog and my Mum in tow and walked all over Europe and England in his many years of rambling. Many years later and taking his insulin he start to have reoccurring infections in his feet. Unfortunately, due to the infections getting worse he had to have his all of toes amputated on the left foot and 3 on the right stopping him walking. My Dad was devistated and never got over it until the day he passed away with sepsis over a year ago which was also a factor with his diabetes as it increases the risk.

So you can see why I have mixed emotions about diabetes.

Some days I don’t think about diabetes at all other day it pisses me off. I used to like a bar of chocolate every so often now I do not dare to touch one. I’m very sensitive to my blood sugar and have a small range where I feel ok. If it goes up too much my diabetes starts to affect my mood and mental health, I get grumpy, snappy and can be very negative.

Are we over looked in the mental health services or slip through the loop holes?

People with diabetes are up to three times more likely to report symptoms of depression and these can be debilitating. For type 2 diabetes, ÂŁ1.8 billion of additional costs to the NHS can be attributed to poor mental health. However, less than 15% of people with diabetes have access to psychological support, in spite of the fact that psychological support improves health and cuts costs by 25%.

The prevalence of psychological conditions is significantly higher among people living with diabetes

(Diabetes UK, 2010. Diabetes UK, 2019)

Mental health conditions are also risk factors for the development of diabetes

As a therapist it is extremely frustrating as I know what to do to help myself however some days are still a struggle, it takes a great effort to get myself back into a positive place and some days I admit it does not matter what I do to help myself. The one thing that always lifts my spirits and mood is actually do therapy with my clients so doing therapy is my therapy.

I’ve been looking around to see what support there is for people who are struggling with the diagnosis or like me with the odd bad day. I’m sad to say it’s very thin on the ground and I can’t find anyone who specialises in this area. I think there is a gap in the market in which I have first hand experience plus 10 years experience as a therapist puts me well placed to help.

It’s OK To Fail.

It’s OK To Fail

“It’s ok to fail. It is not okay to give up.”
Clare LaMeres

There is a saying “There is no failure only results” and I kind of like it as long as it’s used in the correct context.

So why is ok to fail?

Everyone fails, EVERYONE. It’s okay to fail

Don’t be afraid to fail or get knocked back, if you are not where you what to be learn from it, take the good bits and move forward again and leave the bad bits behind.

Failing is not a problem however it becomes a problem if you are failing at the same thing repeatedly without learning a lesson from each attempt.

Have the confidence to say to yourself you will find a way around this problem.

Many of the world’s most successful people have failed many times before finding success.

Fall back on the experiences you already have, use it wisely. Everyday is a school day !

Don’t miss those lessons… because they’re critical.

Rely on the basic knowledge you already have and use that also.

By failing we learn what not to do again, we learn lesson about ourselves and life.

Anyone who tells you they have never failed is telling you BS and not worth wasting your time with. We must fail in order to succeed. It’s okay to fail

By failing we must re access the situation for within and ask powerful questions of ourselves or the people around us or team.

It doesn’t matter what the issue it’s your mental approach to it that matters.

Questions to ask

What can I learn from this situation?

and

How can I improve on what I did last time?

and

How can I grow as person from this?

Finally, stay positive, have a backup plan, and learn from whatever happens. Your failures will be sources of education and inspiration rather than humiliation.

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas A. Edison

Failures can be blessings in disguise.

Go boldly in the direction of your dreams and goals. Don’t allow fear to stand in your way.

Do You Value Yourself?

Do You Value Yourself?

Knowing who you are and what you and learning to value youurself is one of the most important things we can learn about ourselves in life.

Being who you are is critical to who you are and your growth as a person.

Do you value yourself?

What is your perception of yourself?

Do you do your thing or follow others?

Are you a square peg fitting in a round hole?

Being who you want to be isn’t a crime, trying to be like someone else because we are told we need to be like that person is!

Be who you are and say what you feel because those that mind don’t matter and those that matter don’t mind!

Be your authentic self and by doing so you will identify the people you want in your life people who will encourage you love yourself and grow those are the people you want in your life become a better version of yourself

Be who you are. Be who you want to be. It means you value yourself enough to be you. When you look in the mirror do you see a person you like and love?

Be true to who you are and what you want. No should tell you what success mean to you in life or what a great life is or what you should or should not be doing with your life. What success is for one person may not be success for you. The only path is happiness or success in your like is for you to be you and life your life the way you want to.

To get the most out life sometimes we have to follow our own path, to listen yourself don’t get caught up living a life you don’t want to live. Be yourself.

Learn for others wisdom and lessons but ONLY take what works for you. Do more things that make you laugh or smile, more things to make you proud to be you. Don’t be defined by what others think of you. You are you and there will never be other you.

Kurt Cobain Quotes

I’d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.

Being yourself will filter out those people who don’t get you and attracted those that want to be around you. People who are hating the people being real are fake people themselves and the people loving fake people are the same fake people. Real knows real and real knows fake.

Who do you want in your life fake people or real people?

BE YOURSELF because living a life trying to fit in or trying to be someone else so others will like you so you fit in “on the outside” but on “the inside” you will never be happy.

Happiness is the key in life, how happy are you on a consistent basis? We can make a different choice everyday to help to be who we are and the sort of life we want to lead.

You can change your mind anytime or overtime but keep you in mind and don’t spend time anyone or thing that drains your energy. Where you are is not as important as where you are. Defining who you are not is the first step to finding who you are. Give your energy to the positive things and people in your life the one you know support and love you.

The Changing Face Of Therapy

The Changing Face of Therapy

The face of therapy has certainly changed since I first started learning NLP, Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy and becoming part of the self-improvement community.

I first started out seeing people for free for such things like confidence and self-esteem and it was more of a coaching role than as a therapist.

As I qualified and progressed in my learning and confidence I took on more and more clients with various issue some more complicated than others. I’m so glad that my training was very in death and robust so I could tell with such issues also have a mentor on the end of the phone to help, advice and guide me and if I felt the issue to too much for me I’d refer them to my mentor. I also attended many therapy courses learning from some of the best in the industry meaning I fast tracked my learning and knowledge passing each lesson on my clients. The best I am the best result for the client.

Over the 3 or 4 years I have had a massive increase in anxiety or trauma related issues which I never saw at all 7 or 8 years ago, if fact it was rare to get a client for anxiety. Now about 60 – 70 % of my clients are for anxiety or trauma related issues.  I’m finding trauma linked to lots of conditions or the underlying issues.

I’ve also seen a big increase in clients coming to see me for help with child based trauma issues that happen to them which is massively brave to admit and face and get the correct therapy for. I said when I started that I didn’t want to take any abuse cases because I found it very hard to listen to however I have found again this pops out in therapy and they sometimes have come in for something completely different. It still sadness me greatly to hear these stories.

Having the correct training to deal with such cases was an important part of my evolution as a therapist with is called Blast Technique.

I’m still a work in process and believe we all work on ourselves to so we are in the best position to help clients. I continue to learn and progress myself gaining more knowledge to pass on in my therapy practice.
